Blog On The Run
With the proliferation of mobile and hand-held devices these days, there are a variety of ways for people to access your blog. But this technology also provides some new challenges to presenting that data. Typically, these devices are very small and many of them will not be forgiving when displaying your lovingly crafted theme on that tiny screen.
Fear not. There are options.
WordPress.com recently announced that they are providing mobile-friendly themes turned on by default for their blogs. Self-hosted WordPress users have options they can install as well. Weblog Tools Collection has a short write-up on your options and I thought I’d give my input as the Technical Something-Or-Other here at the Guild.
On my blog at Patrick Says, I’ve been using WordPress Mobile Edition by the fine folks at Crowd Favorite for over a year (in various incarnations). It utilizes the Carrington Mobile theme and looks great on my Samsung Epix phone. The installation is slightly tricky since you have to install a plugin and the corresponding theme as well, but the plugin lets you know if you’ve messed something up.
We’ll be installing this plugin later this weekend here on the Guild site, so please check us out next week on your mobile device of choice.
UPDATE: We added the plugin Saturday night!
